5 ways to increase member retention without spending more on ads

Acquiring members is expensive; keeping them is where the margin is. Five retention levers that cost less than another ad campaign.

If you run a membership site, you know the frustration: members sign up, enjoy the content for a month or two, then disappear. You invest in ads, promotions, and discounts to bring them in — but keeping them is a different challenge entirely. The good news is that raising retention doesn't require dumping more money into ads. Here are five of the most effective levers.

1. Improve onboarding for new members

Many members pay and are then left to figure things out alone. A poor onboarding experience can drive churn sharply in the first few months — and most people say they'd stay more loyal to a business that educates and welcomes them after purchase. A welcome email, a short tutorial, or a personalized checklist helps new members feel confident fast. Netflix nails this: new users pick preferences, set up profiles, and get tailored suggestions from day one.

2. Foster a sense of community

People stay for connection, not just content. Members are far more likely to renew when they feel a sense of belonging. Forums, a private group, or live Q&As make a real difference. Peloton didn't just build a fitness platform — they built a community, with leaderboards and shoutouts that keep people coming back. You don't need their scale; start with a private group or a monthly hangout.

3. Regularly update and improve your content

When members feel they've "seen it all," they head for the exit. You don't need a flood of new material — repurpose old content, create themed bundles, or run members-only events. MasterClass keeps subscribers year after year with a steady sense of "there's always something new here." Poll members on what they want next; it shows you're invested in their experience.

4. Offer personalized experiences and perks

Generic recommendations feel hollow; personalized ones feel like the platform gets you. Recommend content based on past activity, and reward your most engaged members with early access or exclusive perks — the way Amazon Prime layers on value. Gamification helps too: points, badges, and streaks can lift engagement meaningfully. Duolingo's streaks and rewards are a masterclass in making engagement sticky.

5. Make customer support your secret weapon

How you respond when members have questions directly affects whether they stay. The vast majority of customers make repeat purchases with companies that offer excellent service. You don't need a big team — offer a couple of support channels and respond quickly. Zappos built its whole brand on going above and beyond. Happy customers are loyal customers.

Keep members by focusing on value

It comes down to making members feel valued, understood, and like they're getting something they can't get anywhere else — through onboarding, community, fresh content, personalization, and support. None of it requires more ad spend. Which one will you try first?
