Elevating the Cloud Appreciation Society: A Modernized Membership Experience for a Growing Community

How Mission Lab transformed CAS’s website to boost engagement, simplify membership, and support long-term growth for 9,000+ cloud enthusiasts

For the Cloud Appreciation Society (CAS), a global community dedicated to cloud enthusiasts, Mission Lab has supported ongoing improvements to their website, focusing on modernizing design, refining the membership experience, and optimizing site performance. By streamlining key user journeys and making the platform more intuitive, we’ve helped CAS provide a more engaging and rewarding experience for their 9,000 active members while also enhancing site manageability.

Challenge

As CAS’s membership base grew, its website faced limitations that impacted both usability and scalability. The society needed to improve its online experience to keep pace with its expanding audience, aiming to deliver an intuitive, accessible platform that supported a vibrant community. Major pain points included:

  • Outdated Design and Navigation: CAS’s site felt dated and didn’t fully capture the society’s distinctive brand and values. Key information was often hard to find, creating friction for both new and returning members.
  • Complex Membership and Renewal Processes: The membership sign-up, gift membership, and renewal workflows were confusing, leading to drop-offs during checkout and missed renewal opportunities.
  • Subscription Price Management: CAS needed a strategic way to adjust legacy subscription prices that minimized churn while reflecting the value of membership.
  • Community and Learning Integration: CAS sought to encourage deeper engagement through courses and community features, requiring seamless integration within the existing member experience.

Solution

Mission Lab took a tailored approach, focusing on iterative improvements that enhanced usability while maintaining CAS’s identity and keeping the system efficient. Key solutions included:

  1. Modernized User Experience and Design Refresh
    • We updated the site’s design with cleaner layouts, refined typography, and a refreshed color scheme, creating a polished, professional look that retained CAS’s unique character. Simplified navigation and a reorganized sitemap made it easier for members to explore different site areas, find resources, and connect with others.
  2. Custom Membership Registration and Renewal Process
    • Using WooCommerce with Memberships and Subscriptions, we implemented a custom registration flow that guided users through each step, from selecting membership options to checkout. Built with JavaScript, this flow allowed for flexibility, enabling features like multiple gift memberships in a single checkout and simplifying renewals with clear, accessible instructions.
    • An “email-only” gift membership option was introduced, streamlining the process for members purchasing on behalf of others by reducing required fields and making it easy to send gift memberships without needing physical address details.
  3. Optimized Subscription Pricing Adjustments
    • To address outdated pricing, we developed a custom system to incrementally adjust legacy subscriptions. This solution applied controlled price increases to older memberships, gradually aligning them with current pricing levels without overwhelming long-time members, leading to increased revenue while preserving loyalty.
  4. Community Engagement and Learning Modules
    • CAS wanted to deepen member engagement by integrating courses and community activities. Using LearnDash, we added educational courses that allowed members to earn badges and showcase their cloud identification skills. We further integrated CAS’s existing Peepso community platform with WooCommerce, synchronizing member profiles and creating a unified experience within the site’s main dashboard.
    • To facilitate better community engagement and consistency across the mobile app and online community, we created a custom Single Sign On (SSO) integration with Firestore to not only allow users to sign on to the website with their app credentials, but also to maintain a sync of user data between that app database (Firestore) and WordPress.

Technical Stack: WooCommerce, WooCommerce Memberships & Subscriptions, custom JavaScript for multi-step registration flows, Peepso community plugin, LearnDash for course functionality.
