StoryLoop – From Portfolio to Marketplace

Building a Scalable Platform to Empower a Growing Creative Community

StoryLoop engaged Mission Lab to elevate their platform from Dan Stevers’ personal domain into a modern, multi-vendor marketplace. The transformation included a complete rebrand, custom design, and a highly functional e-commerce site built on WordPress. Mission Lab’s goal was to create a distinct and professional brand identity while enhancing the platform’s functionality for creators and users alike.

Challenge

StoryLoop’s growth ambitions called for a reimagined brand and digital experience, with several critical challenges:

  • Outdated Brand Identity: The previous branding felt more personal and lacked the polish and professional image needed to compete in a growing media marketplace.
  • Scalability and Platform Limitations: The old Laravel-based site couldn’t meet the demands of scaling the content library, managing high-traffic downloads, or supporting multiple creators.
  • Marketplace and Revenue Tracking: StoryLoop needed multi-vendor capabilities and a transparent commission tracking system to support creators selling through the platform.
  • Enhanced User Experience: With over 300 assets (and growing quickly) with numerous sub-items, StoryLoop required a more streamlined, responsive UI for intuitive browsing and downloading.

Solution

Mission Lab provided a full-scale rebrand and custom platform rebuild, focusing on brand clarity, user experience, and technical efficiency.

1. Brand Transformation and Custom Design

  • Brand Identity: Developed a modern, professional brand (StoryLoop) that aligns with Dan’s growth and expands its appeal to both faith-based and secular markets. This included identifying the new name, defining brand colors, fonts, logo, and a comprehensive brand guide.
  • User Interface and Experience: Designed a sleek, app-like interface with a left sidebar for easy navigation. This visual structure was optimized for mobile, providing a calm, immersive browsing experience that stands out from more cluttered marketplaces.

2. Platform Transition

Rebuilt the entire site on WordPress with Easy Digital Downloads (EDD), customized to handle multi-vendor functionality and asset management needs.

3. Marketplace Expansion

  • Created a marketplace for creatives, allowing for customizable storefronts and intuitive product categorization.
  • Built custom functionality to display creatives with multiple sub-items, enhancing product clarity and user navigation.

4. Advanced Search and Filtering

Integrated Elasticsearch with a React-based interface for fast, responsive browsing across thousands of assets, enabling users to search and filter products seamlessly.

5. Automated Asset Processing with Kubernetes

Deployed Kubernetes to automate asset resizing, watermarking, and file preparation, allowing StoryLoop’s admins to upload raw files and see them automatically processed into multiple formats. This saved significant time and effort on content management.

6. Optimized Download System

Implemented a proactive download feature, with server cron jobs that pre-process download zips. Users can instantly download high-resolution content without waiting for zipping.

7. Commission and Revenue Sharing System

Established an automated monthly commission system that tracks downloads and purchases, providing transparent earnings information for creatives and supporting marketplace growth.

8. Marketing Flexibility with Elementor

Integrated Elementor for dynamic marketing control, allowing StoryLoop’s team to independently manage promotions, seasonal content, and marketing pages.

Technical Stack

  • Backend: WordPress, Easy Digital Downloads, Kubernetes, Docker
  • Frontend: React, Bootstrap, SASS
  • Search: Elasticsearch
  • Payment: Stripe
  • Monitoring: Zabbix for proactive server monitoring

Results

  • Significant Time Savings: Automated asset processing reduced the manual workload for admins, allowing StoryLoop’s team to quickly prepare content for sale.
  • Enhanced User Experience: The responsive React and Elasticsearch interface made product browsing fast and user-friendly, while proactive download zipping improved content access.
  • Marketplace Growth: The multi-vendor system and transparent commission tracking attracted more creatives to join StoryLoop, diversifying the content and increasing user engagement.
  • Flexible Marketing Capabilities: With Elementor, StoryLoop’s marketing team gained control over promotions and seasonal campaigns, keeping the site relevant and engaging.
